New Year, New ... Something?

Hi writers,

I love the beginning of the new year because it's such a natural time to reflect on the past year. Maybe the people around you are reflecting, too. Maybe it makes for some interesting conversations, some ways to connect, the excitement of planning and visioning.

You're probably getting a lot of emails this week. New year, new you! Join this gym. Try this diet. Take this class. Be fitter, be better, be happier. Make a resolution, set an intention, pick a word for 2022. Our culture is already inundated with these messages year round, but in the New Year they get really, really loud. You're not doing enough, they say. You can do a lot better. Here are some things you need to become a better, thinner, more wonderful person.

But why are we really doing all of this? Buried underneath the goals and intentions is the simple act of showing up for oneself. And you don't need a class or a gym or a goal for that.

In 2022, the new year is a new opportunity to show up for myself. When I sit down to nurture my own goals or intentions I communicate to myself that I'm worth the time, no matter what words end up on the page. I am worth the space. I am worth the paper and pen I'm using. I am worth nurturing, nourishing. I'm worth it.

If creativity and writing are ways that you want to show up for yourself this year, there are lots of ways I can guide you in that direction:

  • Join the Durham Writers Salon, which takes place every Wednesday evening from 8-9pm ET on Zoom. The next salon is on January 5th, 2022.

  • Women writers can sit in on my ongoing Monday evening writers workshop, which takes place every other Monday from 6:30-8:30pm ET on Zoom. The next session is on January 10th, 2022.

  • Take advantage of my writing coaching packages if you're interested in re-starting an old project or launching a new one.

Yeah, these classes and coaching sessions might make you a better writer, whatever that means. They might make you happier. They might make you feel like a better person. They might help you meet a goal you have, an intention you set. But, this year, let's put the result on the backburner and stay curious about the process. Let's show up for ourselves.

Happy New Year,

Allison
