Looking for new reading material for Disability Pride Month?

Hi writers and readers,

July is Disability Pride Month, a month that honors the lives, the struggles, the experiences and the history of the disability community.

It’s a good month to ask yourself:

What is your own relationship to your body and mind?

How many writers/artists/influencers with bodies and minds outside the norm do you regularly read or follow?

How much disability history did you learn in school?

In honor of this month I’ve curated two reading lists through Bookshop.com. If you purchase any book off this list it will go toward supporting me as well as supporting local independent bookstores. (It’s a great alternative to Amazon!)

The first list is geared toward adult readers and includes many of the books that have helped me shape my understanding of my own body and its place in the world. Recommended for anyone who wants to read books by writers who are writing about bodies and minds outside the norm - during Disability Pride Month (July) .... or any other month!

The second list is geared toward children’s literature. As someone who reads often to my nieces and nephews, I know that there are a lot of not-so-good children's books out there. And when you're dealing with an issue as nuanced and complex as disability, it's so easy to get it wrong and there are a lot of well-meaning but outdated portrayals. So I’ve curated a list of kids books - many of them written by actual disabled people - that portray disability in all its complexity. Read these books to your disabled kids! Read them to your nondisabled kids! Everyone deserves to learn about disability.

Check out both lists here!

Happy reading!
