Re-Introducing the Durham Writers' Salon - Virtually!

Hi writers,

I get a lot of my creative inspiration from simply living in the world, with all its joys and sorrows and complications and surprises. We never know what the day will hold. There is so much to observe, to wonder about and to share. And anything can be fodder for an essay, poem or story; the right writer can make a trip to the grocery store interesting.

I also gather a lot of inspiration from being in conversation with the world around me - what are other writers saying and talking about? I can find some of this electronically, like on Twitter, for example, but there’s no replacing a community of writers that I actually know.

I find that a prompt is a pretty good substitute for organic daily inspiration. Working with prompts is enlivening to any writing practice -- you’re presented with new words, new sounds, new colors, new ways of thinking.

In the spirit of a well-crafted prompt, and the writing and thinking it inspires, I’m re- launching a new offering: The Durham Writers’ Salon. This will be a weekly virtual writing salon, similar to the salons I once hosted at The Mothership CoWorking Space.

If you’re struggling to maintain your personal writing practice, if you want some accountability and some generative time with words and sentences, if you are craving community, if you’re finding that your current routine isn’t quite as inspirational as you’d like, please join us.

Each week we’ll spend an hour and fifteen minutes together over Zoom. I’ll begin by welcoming everyone and offering a choice of 2 writing prompts. We’ll take 25 minutes to write, a five minute break and then 25 minutes to continue writing. The remaining time will be devoted to sharing our work. No comments, no feedback, just the enjoyment of hearing words and sentences, connecting with other writers, getting inspiration from each other, and being a part of the literary community.

I look forward to the opportunity to do this in person, but for now we’ll plan to meet on Zoom.

This Salon begins on Thursday September 16th, 2021, from 8:00pm - 9:15pm EST, and will run on consecutive Thursday evenings.

There are two ways to participate:

Buy in bulk!

This is a great option for people who want to use this time as accountability, who like the routine and challenge of planning for 5 consecutive sessions and want to be involved in the literary community on a consistent basis.

$80 for 5 consecutive sessions

Last minute drop in!

Let’s say you wake up feeling like you’ve got some creative energy but you’re not quite sure where to put it. Or you’ve been saying all week that you wanted to write and it just hasn’t happened. Or you’re hoping for some inspiration that day. Or you know exactly what you want to write about -- you don't need a prompt -- but you’d love to know that other people are writing too. Hop on to the Zoom and get ready to write and share. (Please note: You must purchase a ticket 24 hours beforehand in order to get the correct Zoom link in your inbox.)

$25 per session

This offering is appropriate for all types of writers, of any genre. And don't let the name fool you -- I'm thrilled to welcome writers from all over the globe; you don't have to reside in Durham since we are working on Zoom at the moment.

The Salon launches on Thursday September 16th, 2021 from 8:00pm EST - 9:15pm EST. You can sign up here!

UPDATE: As of October, this Salon now takes place on Wednesday evenings.
